Go Banana!
The other day, a few of my fellow Defenders and myself visited a local comedy club, Go Bananas. Since I was little, I had always heard my parents talk about this place in hush tones, and never with any description to what it was like. But every so often my grandmother came over, and watched us while my parents ventured out into this place of complete mystery. I very much over-hyped the place in my head, picturing a swanky plush lounge, with swinging singles and over-priced drinks. It was sleezy, and meant to only be enjoyed by adults.
But after driving a small twenty minutes into Montgomery, one of the nicer areas of Cincinnati, I started to realize that like a lot of things from my childhood, my imagination built up a much higher expectation of what was actually true. Nestled in between a bar and what I think was a driving school, this small little club wasn’t even visible from the street, but obscured by the large car dealership in front. After showing my ID (which I finally got to use, being 18) we were seated at a small table, in a very cramped room. No swank, no crushed-velvet purple booths, no swinging singles, just a lot of people wanting to watch amateur comedians while enjoying a beer.

It sort of hit me that my parents weren’t re-claiming their night-lives, but just getting out of the house for a night to enjoy some good dick jokes, and maybe a beer with some cheese fries: without the constant need to entertain children. I can see now, that after living with kids for so many years, you really start to crave adult situations, where you can laugh at asshole-eating, Nazis and the difficulties that African Americans face when being pulled over. It was just strange to sit in a room where I know my parents once sat, laughing at jokes they’ve laughed at, and being in a situation where I wasn’t a kid anymore.
But ultimately, I had a lot of fun, and hope I can make it a regular thing with the Defenders.
The last thing I had to say in this post, was that it’s never to late to start thinking about fantasy football, which starts in only a few short months. While I’m going to be hosting the third Annual Garwood Bowl, I’d like everyone to know that things are going to be even better this year, so make sure you check back for updates on what’s going on. I haven’t yet decided on the official date for the draft as well, but keep the second weekend in August open, and make sure you have checked in your most current e-mail address with me, at GarwoodBowl@gmail.com. Thanks everyone.
